ECMO (Cardiac)

Extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) is a life support system that partially replaces the function of the heart and the lungs.

This technology provides short-term heart and lung support for those suffering from heart or lung failure and it buys valuable time to further assess patients, treat the underlying disease, or arrange for heart or lung transplantation.

Using an extracorporeal (‘outside the body’) pump, this life-saving measure is used to assist patients who have no blood pressure and are failing after a large heart attack. The Mechanical Circulatory Assist Program uses this technology to help patients recover from acute heart failure/cardiogenic shock.
