The Center treats adult patients with severe acute respiratory failure who may benefit from advanced interventions.
Expert consultation and patient care management combine with advanced services including: extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO), pulmonary embolectomy, and thromboendarterectomy.
Patients who may benefit from our program typically develop respiratory failure from the following:
- Acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS)
- Pulmonary embolism
- Acute exacerbations of chronic lung diseases, such as asthma, emphysema, or cystic fibrosis
- Chronic thromboembolic disease
Transporting Patients with ECMO
For patients hospitalized at other institutions who may benefit from ECMO and are too unstable for transport to our center, we may elect to bring our team to the patient. We place the patient on ECMO at the hospital where they are being cared for and transport them to our center with ECMO, via ambulance or aircraft, as needed.
