The elective is in Addis Ababa Ethiopia. There are three general surgeons on staff at the hospita, however, the majority of time is spent with with Dr. Zelalem Molla, the youngest of the three. Residents see patients in clinic with Dr. Molla on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturday mornings and operate with him on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays. Additionally, they take call with him at week-long intervals. Commonly observed surgical pathologies include multi-trauma, goiter, and biliary disease. Common operative cases include exploratory laparotomy for trauma, exploratory laparotomy for perforated viscus, subtotal thryoidectomy for massive goiter, and open common bile duct exploration for choledocholithiasis. Joseph DiNorcia (a recent resident to rotate there) also took Dr. Molla through his first laparoscopic cholecystectomies. Additionally, residents may have the opportunity to spend one weekend in the countryside at a "mobile clinic", seeing hundreds of patients for general health maintenance, recommending further diagnostic work-up and possibly surgery in select cases. Leisure time highlights from the elective may include Ethiopian jazz in downtown Addis Ababa, rock-hewn churches in Lalibela, and the opportunity to go on a safari in nearby Maasai Mara, Kenya.
