Welcome 4th Year Students!

Following the 3rd year surgical clerkship, we are eager to recruit future surgical housestaff prospects to spend additional time on one of our surgical services in the form of a surgical sub-internship. As a surgical sub-intern, you will function at the level of a house-officer: following multiple patients, presenting on morning and evening rounds, coordinating floor-work while simultaneously participating in the operating room. This provides a unique opportunity to experience life as a surgical resident, and to gain greater understanding of the demands which come with training in surgery. Additionally, you will have greater exposure to the surgical attendings, who will further guide your educational experience.

Electives are available in a variety of general surgery and surgical subspecialty settings. These rotations include, but are not limited to:

    • Colorectal Surgery

    • Hepato-Pancreatico-Biliary Surgery

    • Vascular Surgery

    • Transplant Surgery (Liver, Kidney)

    • Pediatric Surgery

    • Cardiac Surgery

    • Bariatric / Advanced Laparoscopic Surgery

    • General Thoracic Surgery

    • Surgical Research

    • Surgical Intensive Care

Please note that rotating on a surgical service as a 4th-year student does not guarantee the student an interview or a training position in our general surgery residency program, but a strong performance on a 4th-year elective can greatly improve an applicants standing.
