About: 

Dr. Shilpa Ravella is a gastroenterologist with expertise in nutrition and an assistant professor of medicine at Columbia University Medical Center where she directs the Adult Small Bowel Program, managing the gastrointestinal evaluations and medical care of adult intestinal and multivisceral transplant patients. Dr. Ravella holds a B.S. in Biology from MIT and an M.D. from the University of Pittsburgh. She has a strong background in intestinal disease, having completed her gastroenterology fellowship at the University of Illinois in Chicago with advanced training in nutrition and inflammatory bowel disease.

Dr. Ravella offers an integrative approach to patient care with a focus on optimizing nutrition. She is interested in the interactions between food, the microbiome and the immune system, especially the potential of nutritional therapy to prevent and treat disease. She writes regularly on food, health and wellness and has written for a variety of national media including The AtlanticDiscover Magazine, SlatePBS and TED-Ed.
