Our Team
Hiroo Takayama, MD, PhD, is Chief of Adult Cardiac Surgery. For years, he has led the Aortic Center at Columbia, focusing on endovascular and minimally-invasive aortic treatments. He also specializes in minimally-invasive mitral repair, septal myectomy for hypertropic cardiomyopathy as well as complex high-risk surgical procedures.
Michael Argenziano, MD, is Associate Chief of the Division of Cardiac, Thoracic, & Vascular Surgery at Columbia. Dr. Argenziano's practice spans from surgical valve repair and coronary bypass to less common surgical conditions like cardiac tumors and pericardial constriction.
Emile Bacha, MD, is Chief of the Division of Cardiac, Thoracic, & Vascular Surgery and the Director of the NewYork-Presbyterian Congenital Heart Center. His surgical expertise encompasses the full spectrum of congenital and pediatric heart diseases, including complex neonatal cardiac repairs.
Isaac George, MD, performs all types of open complex adult cardiac surgery, including valve surgery, aortic aneurysm surgery, and coronary bypass grafting. He is a specialist in all forms of transcatheter valve therapies and is the Surgical Director of the Structural Heart & Valve Center.
David M. Kalfa, MD, PhD, is a cardiothoracic surgeon specializing in pediatric and congenital heart surgery. Dr. Kalfa is an expert in minimally-invasive and open-heart surgical techniques for valve repair and replacement in children.
Craig R. Smith, MD, is Chief of Surgery at Columbia and a world-renowned heart surgeon. Dr. Smith's surgical expertise includes all forms of valve repair and coronary artery bypass. Dr. Smith's research into transcatheter aortic valve repair (TAVR) has shaped international standards in heart care.
Koji Takeda, MD, PhD, is the director of the Cardiac Transplant program, one of the highest-volume transplant programs in the country. Dr. Takeda has expertise in ventricle-assist device implementation and pulmonary embolism care.

Your First Appointment
Our heart surgeons are located at:
Milstein Hospital Building (MHB) at 177 Fort Washington Avenue (between 165th and 168th Street in Manhattan).
The office is on the 7th Floor, Suite 435.
Parking is available in the Staff/Visitors parking garage at the corner of 165th Street and Fort Washington Avenue. You may also take advantage of valet parking in the circular driveway in front of the Milstein Hospital Building.
When you enter the building, you will be provided with a visitor's pass at the front desk. Proceed to the elevator bank to the left. On the 7th floor, follow the "Cardiothoracic Surgery Service" signs to Suite 435.
After arriving in the office, please sign in, and you will also be asked to complete several surgical and hospital forms. This information is used by the hospital and your doctors to ensure an appropriate health care plan of action is developed.
Once you’re here, our team will work with you to determine if you’ll need surgery, and if so, the best surgical options and any non-surgical options which may be available. No matter what, we’ll be with you every step of the way.
