Our Super Specialty: Reoperative Colorectal Surgery

The Global Center has vast experience in reoperative abdominal and pelvic surgery for a variety of conditions. Scarring from previous surgery, postoperative complications, radiation, surgical alteration of anatomy, recurrence of cancer and complicated disease conditions needing treatment might result in a hostile abdomen that is difficult to navigate. Surgeons in the Global Center have the technical expertise to navigate the abdomen even in such near impossible circumstances, often able to help control or cure disease. Resection, revision, reconstruction and restoration of function are often possible even in these circumstance sometimes needing ‘end of the road’ procedures that can even avoid an permanent ostomy.

Some such circumstances include:

  • Operations for recurrent adhesions and obstructions
  • Management of surgical and endoscopic complications: anastomotic leaks, fistulae, abscesses, sinuses, strictures and stenosis
  • Removal of large, advanced or rare tumors including locally advanced and recurrent tumors while restoring function
  • Extensive alteration of anatomy from previous operations
  • Enterocutaneous and enteroatmospheric fistulae
  • Pouch (J, S, colonic pouch) construction, reconstruction with repair, repair or redo
  • Continent ileostomy construction and revision
  • Intestine and colorectal fistulae to the bladder, vagina and other pelvic organs
  • Complex rectovaginal, anoperineal and pouch related fistulae
  • Radiation related fistulae including abdominal, perineal, rectourethral and internal fistulae
  • Turnbull Cutait procedure
  • Complex problems related to the pelvic floor and functional bowel disorders

In some instances, an integrated approach using advanced interventional endoscopy and surgery allows the least invasive approaches for management.
