Pediatric Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD) Surgery Program at Columbia
If your child has inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), managing their symptoms is essential to their health and well-being. At our Pediatric IBD Surgery Program, our team collaborates with IBD specialists from across Columbia to provide comprehensive, personalized care for your child. We offer the latest surgical treatments for IBD, including minimally invasive laparoscopic intestinal surgeries and endoscopic procedures, and we are leading the research into tomorrow's care.
- Laparoscopic intestinal surgery and interventional endoscopy are minimally invasive procedures that can address symptoms of IBD without traditional open surgery.
- Our surgeons are integrated into a larger team of IBD specialists that include pediatric gastroenterologists, nutritionists, immunologists, social workers and more.
- Our program is focused on alleviating symptoms while working with you and your child to develop strategies to effectively manage these chronic conditions.

Who We Treat
We treat children and adolescents with IBD and related conditions. Because IBD is a chronic condition that requires support throughout their lives, our team can also help transition older teens into our comprehensive adult IBD program.
What is Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD)?
IBD occurs when the immune system starts to attack healthy cells in the digestive tract, causing inflammation and painful symptoms like abdominal pain, diarrhea, bloody stools, and weight loss. The two main types of IBD are Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis. IBD symptoms can unexpectedly become worse (flares) and can increase the chances of some conditions like colon cancer.
