About Esophageal Disease

The esophagus is a tube that connects the throat to the stomach, allowing food and liquid to pass through to be digested. Muscular rings (sphincters) at each end open and close as food passes through, and contractions along the esophagus move food and drink down into the stomach.

Esophageal diseases can cause food or stomach acid to rise back up, or regurgitate, or make it difficult to swallow. In some cases, surgery may be necessary to restore proper function or relieve chronic symptoms. Some digestive conditions are associated with increased risk for serious diseases like cancer of the esophagus.

Highlights of Our Program

Leaders in Esophageal Disease Research

The most advanced treatments start with the latest discoveries. Columbia is the epicenter for esophageal disease research—we are home to more actively funded NIH research for esophageal cancer than any other medical center in the nation.

A Collaborative Approach to Care

Our multidisciplinary team includes clinicians from the Herbert Irving Comprehensive Cancer Center and surgeons from one of the most active surgical programs in the country for esophageal cancer. We also work closely with pediatric specialists at Columbia to treat conditions like esophageal atresia.

Care Where You Need It

Surgeries are performed at NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital, one of the leading medical centers in the nation. For office visits, we also see patients at the Columbia Lung & Esophageal Center of New Jersey and at ColumbiaDoctors Midtown in New York City.

Columbia Virtual Visits

And for some visits, we offer telehealth appointments through Columbia Virtual Visits—so you can skip the commute and meet with our team right from the comfort of your own home.
