The Global Center has developed a home grown brand of abdominal and perineal wound care and ostomy management that is specialized and unique. Our world-class Wound, Ostomy, and Continence Nurses (WOCNs) have developed expertise in the care of complex wounds related to colorectal surgery, enterocutaneous fistulas, challenging ostomy management and continent ileostomy care.
The NYP/Columbia Global Center provides advanced care to patients with intestinal fistulas and other abdominal conditions secondary to inflammatory bowel disease, benign colorectal disease, and colorectal cancer.
The Global Center at NewYork-Presbyterian/Columbia is distinguished for its expertise in the management of all problems related to the small intestine, colon, rectum and anal canal. The Global Center has vast experience in reoperative abdominal and pelvic surgery for a variety of conditions. Scarring from previous surgery, postoperative complications, radiation, surgical alteration of anatomy, recurrence of cancer and complicated disease conditions needing treatment might result in a hostile abdomen that is difficult to navigate. Surgeons in the Global Center have the technical expertise to navigate the abdomen even in such near impossible circumstances, often able to help control or cure disease.
Anorectal fistulas are a common and vexing problem that can significantly affect quality of life. When left untreated, patients with the condition can get repeated infections and abscesses. Anyone is at risk of developing the condition, however, they may be associated with other conditions like Crohn’s disease, where fistulas might be more complex, recurrent and particularly difficult to manage.
The Global Center Outcomes Research Group (GCORG) is a world leader in Outcomes Research. The surgeons and gastroenterologists in the Center have led studies that have advanced the management of colorectal and inflammatory bowel disease. These studies have improved our understanding of how best to treat simple, complex, common and rare colorectal disease conditions using medical therapy, endoscopic procedures and surgical techniques.
