Dr. Hiroo Takayama, cardiac surgeon and Chief of Adult Cardiac Surgery at NewYork-Presbyterian/Columbia University Irving Medical Center, has been honored with the prestigious 2025 Physician of the Year Award by the NYP/CUIMC Recruitment, Retention, Recognition, & Respect Council (R4). This well-deserved recognition highlights his unwavering commitment to excellence in patient care and collaboration.

The Physician of the Year Award is an annual celebration by the Department of Nursing to honor collegiality, collaboration, and the significant contributions of physicians to nursing practice in various clinical settings. This award recognizes attending physicians, fellows, and residents who demonstrate competence, compassion, and work collaboratively with nurses to achieve the highest standards of patient care.

Dr. Takayama has over 20 years of experience treating a wide range of heart and vascular conditions and is internationally recognized for his groundbreaking work in complex aortic surgeries. His dedication, leadership, and expertise have transformed the field of cardiac surgery, touching the lives of thousands of patients. Through his multitude of leadership roles at Columbia, he has contributed to the care of over 4,000 patients, performing approximately 300-350 aortic and cardiac surgical procedures each year.
