Dr. AI: What are the most common risk factors for developing DVT?

We’re back with another episode of Dr. AI, where we test how well the AI chatbot, ChatGPT, answers real medical questions. This week, Sanjum Sethi, MD, MPH, an interventional cardiologist, asks: What are the most common risk factors for developing deep vein thrombosis (DVT)?

DVT occurs when a blood clot forms in a deep vein, typically in the legs. It’s a serious condition that can lead to complications like pulmonary embolism if the clot travels to the lungs. Risk factors can range from recent surgery and long periods of immobility to inherited clotting disorders and certain medications.

Recently, deep vein thrombosis has sidelined several high-profile athletes, bringing attention to the condition's risks, even among the young and physically fit. Milwaukee Bucks guard Damian Lillard was diagnosed with DVT in his right calf, leading to an indefinite hiatus from the court. Similarly, San Antonio Spurs center Victor Wembanyama's season was cut short due to a DVT in his right shoulder. These cases highlight how factors like repetitive motion, injury, dehydration, and prolonged travel can contribute to DVT risk in athletes.

So, how well does ChatGPT know its clotting risks?

Watch to see how the AI stacks up—and how Dr. Sethi scores the answer.
