Routine Procedures: Dr. Guzman on Olympic-Level Snoozing, OR Playlists, and Eating His Way Through the Day

coffee cup and morning homage

Snooze Button Champion, OR DJ

Francisco Guzman, MD
Bariatric Surgeon

What time does your alarm go off in the morning?

5:00.

Snooze or no snooze?

I snooze every single day for like an hour. If you look at my phone, I have alarms every five minutes for every possible hour, for all the times I’m required to wake up at whatever time of the day.

Breakfast of choice (especially before a big day)?

Omelet with turkey, cheese, and peppers and onions.

First thing you do when you get to work:

Coffee. And eat more.

Do you have any pre-op rituals or routines?

I don’t have a routine. I just can’t operate without music.

What music is in your OR?

Depends on the mood. There’s a couple of playlists, but mainly it’s one like house/EDM sort of blend. Then when I get tired of that, I have a 90s alternative rock one. Then maybe oldies, like 80s music. I just alternate those. When my speaker runs out of battery, I usually defer to whoever’s in the room, which always turns into a disaster.

Favorite shoes for long days standing in the OR:

Danskos, they’re horrible, but that’s what I use.

Favorite part of your day:

Operating, for sure. Being in the OR. Everything else is painful.

What’s always in your lab coat pocket or bag?

I don’t wear one. I’ve never worn my lab coat, they’re just hanging there. I really don’t carry anything, just keys and my phone.

Any non-medical habit that helps you stay focused?

For me, in the OR, music. I get distracted without it.

Most underrated part of your job:

Underrated? I don’t know about that one.

When you finally get home, what’s the first thing you do?

Eat. I eat a lot.

If one of your patients saw you outside the hospital, they’d be surprised to see you…

I actually ran into one of my patients at the American Dream mall in New Jersey. I didn’t recognize her at first, but she came up and said hi. She’d lost a ton of weight. It was a really nice moment—just running into her “in the wild,” seeing how happy and confident she was.
