A diagnosis of liver cancer raises some hard questions, and in this episode of Dr. AI, Meaghan Phipps, MD, a transplant hepatologist at Columbia, puts ChatGPT to the test with a question she hears regularly from patients newly diagnosed with liver cancer: What is my prognosis?
AI gets quite a bit right, but Dr. Phipps finds some important distinctions missing. Not all liver cancers are alike, and prognosis depends on far more than the diagnosis itself. The type and extent of the cancer, condition of the underlying liver, and a person's overall health all influence which treatments may be possible. Even survival statistics, presented without sufficient context, can leave you with a misleading picture of what lies ahead.
Dr. Phipps explains why liver cancer treatment often looks very different from what patients expect, including options that may offer a chance for cure. She also makes the very poignant case for a care team that understands the individual and can put the information in perspective, knowing how to guide them through the decisions ahead. So, how did ChatGPT do? Dr. Phipps gives it a 6-7 (cue Gen Alpha wobble) out of 10. Watch the episode above to hear all the nuances between.
