Our Services

The Advanced Emphysema & COPD Program offers surgical, minimally-invasive, and non-surgical treatments options for patients with COPD.

Lung Volume Reduction Surgery Program

Lung volume reduction surgery (LVRS) is the surgical removal of severely damaged lung tissue. By removing the diseased tissue, the goal is to improve remaining lung function in those with end-stage emphysema. Our surgeons are among the first to use this technique, leading the United States in volume and survival rates. We are the only NYC hospital to be designated a Center of Excellence by the NIH for lung volume reduction surgery. Learn more about LVRS.

Bronchoscopic Lung Volume Reduction

Bronchoscopic Lung Volume Reduction (BLVR) is a non-surgical procedure that works similarly to LVRS. Instead of removing damaged lung tissue, in BLVR, a valve is placed in the lung to close off the damaged section. We are a leading center for bronchoscopic lung volume reduction. Our team participated in several of the key trials that showed BLVR to be an effective alternative to surgery, and we are now an active center for FDA-approved bronchoscopic valves. Learn more about BLVR.

Lung Transplant Program at Columbia

When emphysema or COPD is so severe that LVRS and BLVR can’t help, replacing the damaged lung with a healthy, transplanted lung from a donor may be an option. Patients who are candidates for lung transplantation are referred to our NewYork-Presbyterian/Columbia University Irving Medical Center Lung Transplant Program, one of the most active and successful in the country. Program Highlights

Unmatched Experience

Our team treats more people with COPD and emphysema than any other hospital in the New York metro area. We’ve been offering advanced procedures like Lung Volume Reduction Surgery (LVRS) since 1994, well before other programs, and we are among the first to perform non-invasive Bronchoscopic Lung Volume Reduction (BLVR) procedures.

Proven Results

Our lung volume reduction surgery results are better than those of any other center in the country, including the lowest mortality rate; Our patients’ one-year survival rate was 99% and three-year was 97%, with major improvements noted in quality of life. Our Lung Transplant Program is one of the highest-volume centers in the Northeast, with outstanding outcomes.

Recognized Quality

Columbia University Irving Medical Center is the only medical center in the NYC-metro area to be designated as a Center of Excellence by the National Institute of Health for specialized emphysema surgeries like lung volume reduction surgery.
