Research/Academic Time
We believe that dedicated academic enrichment is a cornerstone of surgical training and an essential component of our residents' professional development. Residents are strongly encouraged to pursue two years of protected academic development following the PGY-3 year, allowing them to develop the skills needed to become future leaders in academic surgery, surgical education, clinical investigation, and translational research. This time is fully supported through a variety of funding mechanisms, including departmental research grants, NIH training grants, and funded clinical fellowship opportunities.
The Department of Surgery at Columbia has a longstanding tradition of scientific discovery and innovation. Through the Division of Surgical Science and extensive collaborations across Columbia University Irving Medical Center, residents have access to a diverse portfolio of research opportunities led by nationally and internationally recognized investigators. Multiple NIH-funded laboratories within the Departments of Surgery and Medicine support resident scholarship across a broad range of disciplines, including cancer biology and immunology, transplantation tolerance, xenotransplantation, acute respiratory distress syndrome, cardiac valve physiology and biomechanics, ex vivo organ perfusion and rehabilitation, biomedical engineering, and clinical data science. Residents are also encouraged to pursue outcomes research, health services research, quality improvement, medical education scholarship, and other clinically focused investigations aligned with their career goals.
In addition to traditional laboratory research, Columbia offers several fully funded academic fellowship opportunities that provide advanced training while fostering scholarly productivity. These include the Surgical Education Fellowship, Adult and Pediatric ECMO Fellowships, and Critical Care Fellowship, among others. These experiences allow residents to develop expertise in specialized areas while building the educational, leadership, and investigative skills necessary for careers in academic surgery.
Our commitment to resident scholarship extends beyond protected research time. Residents receive mentorship from experienced faculty, structured support for project development and dissemination, and dedicated funding to present their work at regional, and national scientific meetings. Whether pursuing basic science, translational, clinical, or educational research, residents benefit from an environment that values curiosity, innovation, collaboration, and academic excellence.
