Continued Leadership in Pancreatic Disease Care

We’ve been at the forefront of pancreatic disease care since the beginning: Columbia surgeon Dr. Allen Oldfather Whipple performed the first-ever Whipple procedure — now, the most common type of surgery for pancreatic cancer. Today, Columbia performs more of these procedures than most centers in the world.

Currently, our research team is at the forefront of pancreatic disease research and our robust offerings of clinical trials exceed many other specialized pancreatic cancer programs in the metro area.

Our Services

At Columbia, we aim to provide the most innovative care possible for each of our pancreatic disease and cancer patients. Our team has specialized programs that help focus Columbia’s many resources for our patients:

  • Pancreatic Cancer Program: Treating pancreatic cancer requires compassion, commitment, and hope. Our team of oncologists, surgeons, interventional radiologists, and clinical researchers bring these traits to every patient they see. No matter the stage of the disease, we will put together a personalized treatment plan designed to meet your goals of care.
  • Pancreatitis Program: Understanding that those with pancreatitis require specialized care, we developed a program to meet the needs of these patients. The Pancreas Center is home to the only dedicated pancreatitis team in New York.
  • Prevention and Genetics Team: The Pancreas Center’s genetic team offers state-of-the-art genetic screenings and counseling. Our genetic specialists go through your family history and risk factors to develop customized plans reducing your individual risk.
  • Support Services: The treatment of pancreatic disease requires a full mind-body approach, and our psychological services help strengthen coping skills and offer an empathetic ear. We also host support groups for you and your loved ones to help relieve stress and share with others going through a similar experience.
  • Diet & Nutrition Services: Getting the right nutrients from your diet is more challenging with pancreatic disease, and our team has a nutritionist who specializes in optimal meal management for lifelong care.

We're no longer just accepting a radiology report that says ‘this is inoperable.’ In our experience, about 80% of the time radiology is incorrect. So we are using other criteria and getting more aggressive about surgery in people who have been deemed inoperable in the past” — Dr. John Chabot, Director of the Pancreas Center.
