Our Super Specialty: Advanced and Recurrent Intestinal, Colon and Rectal Cancer
The Global Center's colorectal cancer expertise bring you options other centers lack, including the ability to do reconstructions while avoiding a permanent ostomy.
Our Mission
Our mission is to provide a patient-centered, multidisciplinary approach to the management of colon and rectal cancer. Surgeons, gastroenterologists, medical and radiation oncologists, pathologists, radiologists, genetic counselors, social workers, nursing staff and other specialists routinely collaborate in caring for each one of our patients.
The Global Center Approach
Recognized by the National Cancer Institute as a designated comprehensive cancer center, our program provides access to specialists in every discipline, offering the kind of in-depth expertise only possible at a major academic medical institution.
Our physicians are global leaders in:
- Innovative technologies
- Genetics
- Epidemiology
- Prevention
- Clinical trials and "bench to bedside" research
These skills allow us to offer you the most advanced therapies for colorectal cancer.
Our team meets weekly to discuss the best management for each patient in our dedicated tumor board. The latest imaging techniques are utilized to evaluate stage and determine appropriate therapy. Radiation and medical oncologists employ sophisticated therapies that complement surgical treatment of colorectal cancer.
Surgeons in the Global Center routinely perform laparoscopic and open surgery for the cure of colon and rectal cancers. Our experience with technological innovations such as robotic surgery and transanal endoscopic microsurgery (TEMS) allows for a minimally invasive approach to manage a range of cancers in the colon and rectum.
Our surgeons have the highest level of expertise in complex surgical procedures to preserve the sphincter and minimize the need for a permanent ostomy even in difficult situations. Our experience with complex and reoperative abdominal and pelvic surgery also facilitates the surgical management of recurrent and locally advanced cancer as well as salvage operations in challenging situations.
Global Center Services for Treating Advanced Colon and Rectal Cancer
Interventional Endoscopy
Our gastroenterologists and surgeons are leaders in the development of endoluminal procedures, allowing for complex techniques to be accomplished endoscopically instead of using traditional surgery.
Surgery
We perform complex operations to preserve continence and avoid an ostomy. These include:
- Intersphincteric proctectomy and reconstructive colonic J-pouch and coloplasty
- Repairs to previously created pouches.
- Pelvic exenteration of locally advanced cancers
- Robotic and other minimally invasive surgery, such as single-incision laparoscopic colorectal surgery (SILS) and transanal endoscopic microsurgery (TEMS).
Chemotherapy and Radiotherapy
We offer chemotherapy and immunotherapy for advanced disease, including heated abdominal therapy for people with abdominal metastases.
Precision radiation therapy for rectal cancer
We provide intraoperative radiotherapy during the surgical procedure, to eliminate any cancer cells that may be left behind from the operation.
