Care at the Global Center
The Global Center for Integrated Colorectal Surgery provides a unique blend of personalized care that combines medical, nutritional, interventional endoscopic, procedural, and surgical treatments for colorectal, IBD, and pouch conditions - all under one roof.
About Enhanced Recovery
Colorectal resection surgery has historically been associated with significant complication rates, as high as 38.3% for open procedures. Post-operative pain, nausea, and ileus are often associated with extended hospital stays following colon resection surgery, with laparoscopy offering a slight benefit as compared to the open approach. In an effort to improve post-operative outcomes and reduce length of stay (LOS), “fast-track” recovery protocols in multiple surgical areas have been established and are now considered standard of care. These Enhanced Recovery After Surgery (ERAS) protocols provide evidence-based recommendations for perioperative care, with the goal of optimizing recovery. Colorectal-specific protocols have since been formulated, providing standardized recommendations for perioperative issues, such as the use of preoperative bowel prep, nausea prevention, nasogastric tube use, and post-operative pain control.
Our Center combines protocols based on ongoing available evidence for best practice together with the results noted for our patients as well as the findings of our own studies to improve outcomes after elective colorectal surgery. This includes enhancing postoperative comfort, reducing pain and nausea, shorter hospital stays, lower morbidity and quicker recovery.
Our Center was one of the first few in the world to publish the safety, feasibility and enhancement of patient experience after same-day discharge after colectomy due to efficacy of our perioperative care protocols when combined with high quality surgery.
