What is Orthoplastic Surgery?

Orthoplastic surgery is a collaborative strategy where orthopedic surgeons and plastic surgeons work together to formulate a comprehensive plan to treat a wide variety of musculoskeletal issues.. By allowing each specialist to focus on their area of expertise, orthoplastic surgery offers greater flexibility and a wider range of possible solutions for the patient to treat the underlying issue and restore form and function.

Who We Treat

Our program treats patients with complex surgical needs. For example, during a sarcoma or bone tumor removal, the orthopedic surgeon might remove the tumor, followed by their plastic surgery colleague, who might correct the muscle and bone defects caused by the resection and close the wound.

This formalized combined approach allows our surgeons to tackle a wide variety of complex problems in a way that best supports each patient. Data shows that incorporating plastic surgeons into the surgical team for complex cases leads to lower rates of wound complications and better functional outcomes.
